Punjab Kings won their second game of the season while Rajasthan suffered their first loss in the 2023 IPL.

Sanju Samson's squad suffered their first loss of the year in Rajasthan Royals' first home game of the year, which was played in Guwahati, as Punjab won Game 8 of the IPL 2023 by 5 runs on Wednesday night at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Punjab was given the opportunity to bat first and posted a total of 197/4, with 86 coming from captain Shikhar Dhawan. Nevertheless, 22-year-old Prabhsimran Singh was the major star of the innings after he slammed a half-century in just 28 balls to give the teams the perfect start.

As a response, Rajasthan was reduced to 57/3 in 6 overs, but their chase never really got going. As RR required 74 runs off the final 30 balls at one point, Dhruv Jurel came on as an impact sub and made his debut. Shimron Hetmyer blasted 36 off 18 balls and the 22-year-old crushed 32 off 15 deliveries to help the "home team" reach 16 required off the final over.

In the opening match of the IPL, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Delhi Capitals by 50 runs, with debutant Kyle Mayers and Mark Wood being the heroes of the match. Mayers' knock of 73 runs off 38 balls, which included seven sixes, helped LSG post a solid total of 193/6 in their 20 overs. In reply, Delhi Capitals could only manage 143/9, with David Warner's knock of 56 off 48 balls being the only highlight. Wood took five wickets for 14 runs in his four overs, scarring the top-order of Delhi Capitals with his scorching pace.
